Deki gives small-screen game builders a visual scene editor

Deki provides an editor for arranging a game’s images and text on a computer before building it for a small device’s screen. A handheld-game builder could check the character and button layout before transferring the game to the device. The project is still at an early stage, and custom behavior needs programming.

From arranging a scene to running it

An editor is a program for arranging and changing a game’s elements. Deki Editor can also run the scene on the computer, then build the device program from the same environment. Its current firmware target is ESP32-S3, a chip that runs the device’s program.

What remains unsettled?

CNX Software covered the project on 25 October. Its own documentation calls the status “0.x”: file formats may still change before version 1.0. A working demonstration does not establish equal speed for every game or support for every display. The project’s code uses the Apache 2.0 licence.
