ESP32-S3’s hidden radio inspires an open-source SDR project

An ordinary ESP32-S3 board becomes a radio experiment beyond Wi-Fi networking, with useful ideas and important limits.

What happened?

Hackaday’s 17 October roundup highlights SDR discoveries in ordinary radio chips. One implementation, esp32-sdr-trx, exposes an internal ESP32-S3 radio path for reception and experimental transmission.

SDR, simply explained

Software-defined radio moves part of signal processing into software. Editorial perspective: the interesting learning opportunity is the connection between radio hardware, a stream of samples and computer-side processing, beyond ordinary network packets.

A research project, with boundaries

The project README describes transmission as experimental, with uncalibrated output power and limited board testing. This does not establish official manufacturer support.

Start with the receiving documentation. Radio transmission requires the applicable licence and compliance with local rules. LCENJ has not physically tested this hardware.
